What is Outdoor Tent
Outdoor tent is a shelter consisting of sheets of fabric or other material draped over, attached to a frame of poles or a supporting rope. While smaller tents may be free-standing or attached to the ground, large tents are usually anchored using guy ropes tied to stakes or tent pegs. First used as portable homes by nomads, tents are now more often used for recreational camping and as temporary shelters.
Components of Outdoor Tent
Fabric
Most tents are made out of nylon because, if it is well woven, nylon is both lightweight and extremely durable. Coated nylon is used for waterproofing; nylon mesh is used for inner walls. Although polyester is slightly heavier than nylon, it doesn’t expand when wet and is more tear resistant. Ripstop fabric does exactly what its name suggests – prevents tears and rips. Canvas tents are very durable, but are also very heavy.
Poles
Many quality poles are made out of aluminium because the metal is lightweight and resilient. Poles can also be made from fibreglass. Most tents have poles that are linked together with an elastic shock cord, making for an easier setup.
Rain Fly
A rain fly is made of waterproof material that extends over the tent. It can protect you tent from the rain and from the harmful rays of the sun that can damage the waterproof coating on your tent. The best, and most effective, rain flys extend all the way to the ground.
Guylines
Guylines connect through the rain fly to the pole and the tent. This feature will make your tent much more stable in windy weather.
Types of Outdoor Tent

Family Camping Tents
Family camping tents are made for just that – a family. Therefore, they are often the largest tent types, intended for larger groups (4 people or more). As most family camping is done in the summer-time, such tents should be designed for effective ventilation and made of lightweight fabric. Look for mesh doors and windows as these features allow air to circulate (it can get pretty stuffy inside a tent in the summer heat). In a group of people, it doesn’t take long to feel cramped. If your family primarily stays at a campground while camping, the weight of your tent shouldn’t be a main concern. Therefore, extra space found in larger family tents is a good idea. Most offer 1-3 rooms for sleeping or storage of equipment; obviously, the more room, the more privacy. Family camping tents are also taller, ranging from about 6-8+ feet at the peak (in the middle of the tent).
Three-Season Tents
Three-season tents are good, general purpose tents. Most camping situations (unless you plan to camp in serious winter weather) generally require a three-season tent. They are designed perfectly for spring, summer, and fall. This means that they provide adequate protection in all weather conditions except in extreme snowfall or wind; the tent’s poles are not designed to support the weight of snow. Although the three-season tent is heavier than, say, a family or cabin tent, they are less expensive, lighter (4-10 pounds) and more compact (3-5 feet tall at peak).
Four-Season Tents
Four-season tents include winter camping. If you plan to camp in extreme weather, a four-season tent is best. As they cover all the seasons, four-season tents are the most versatile of all tents. They are generally smaller tents, meant for 1-4 people. Meant to protect campers in heavy weather, the four-seasons are usually more weather-proof and are made with heavier fabrics that have thick, waterproof coating. The tents are built low and have vertical or curved walls (3-5 feet tall at peak) to shed snow and large vestibules for cooking and storage. Because their flies generally reach the ground, the four-seasons are less ventilated and so more likely to have interior condensation. Although the four-seasons do have a greater weight (4-15 pounds) and pack size than the three-season tents, they are easy to use and you may find that the added versatility makes up for the extra weight. Just remember that four season tents are still not intended for the even more extreme conditions of mountaineering.
Dome Tents
Dome tents are very popular. They are great as three-season or summer/family tents and less expensive than cabin tents. Though small, they are very stable (not to mention strong with aluminium poles) and offer a nice amount of headroom. Dome-shaped, dome tents are made to shed snow and rain; they resist wind well with the aid of a rain-fly. Dome tents are rather easy to put up with their free-standing design; they don’t require guy lines or tent stakes to remain upright.
Convertible Tents
Convertible camping tents can convert from a four-season tent to a three-season. To do this you must remove the tent cover, a couple of the poles and open the zippered windows for ventilation.
Single Wall Tents
Single wall tents are less bulky and heavy (their design doesn’t include flies making their weight closer to that of bivy sacks) than four-season tents. Single wall tents are made of waterproof, breathable material which means that they function best in cool and dry conditions, above snowline. Bear in mind that they do not do as well in high humidity or heat of summer or sea level.
Screen Tents
Screen tents have mesh sides to keep away insects, but their tops are waterproof to withstand wind and rain. These tents are great because of their high visibility which allows you to enjoy your surroundings.
Materials of Outdoor Tent
Cotton/canvas Tents
One of the most common tent materials you may come across is cotton or canvas. When choosing a cotton/canvas tent, you can count on extra temperature regulation: Cotton is great at keeping you cosy but also ventilates well when things get too warm.Compared to other tent materials, cotton is less prone to condensation.
Pvc-coated Tents
When buying a large tent made of cotton, you may notice the tent has a polyvinyl chloride coating on the exterior. This polyvinyl chloride coating on your canvas tent makes it waterproof from the start, so there is no need to weather it prior to embarking upon your camping trip. The only downside to the waterproof layer is that it makes the tent a little more prone to condensation. If you intend to buy a PVC-coated tent, it is essential to choose a coated tent with enough ventilation, so condensation does not become a problem.
Polyester-cotton Tents
A polyester-cotton blend does not have to be coated to be waterproof, although you will find that most polycotton tents will have an additional waterproof layer, which acts as a water repellent.Polyester and cotton are also more affordable compared to some other tent fabrics.
Polyester Tents
Tents made completely from polyester are a popular option. Many manufacturers prefer the durability of this material for new tent releases, as polyester is a little more durable than nylon and is available in a variety of coatings. You will have to do some research before choosing a specific polyester tent, though. The coating used on a polyester tent may affect the price of the tent. Ideally, you need a polyester tent with a coating that provides enough ventilation yet does not let moisture through.A polyester tent is less affected by sunlight, too, making it ideal for camping in the Australian sun.
Nylon Tents
Campers intending to go hiking may prefer the nylon tent over any other tent. Nylon is a light material, ensuring the carry weight of the tent stays to an absolute minimum. Nylon tents also tend to be among the most affordable tents on the market.A nylon tent without additional coating is also a possibility, considering that nylon fibres do not absorb water. This also means nylon tents do not become heavier or shrink when encountering rain.
Consider The Number Of People Using The Tent
Always, always ignore the concept that a four-person tent sleeps four. It does not. It might just sleep three, but for a comfortable experience two would be best in such a tent.Should the weather be poor, that extra space will be a godsend with all of you in the tent.Think about the space you will need in that tent and what you want to store in the tent with you.
Think About The Conditions Of Use
Some tents are better suited to different environments.A summer tent will be made of a lightweight material, have a lot of ventilation, and is likely not designed for harsh conditions. A three-season tent will more likely survive heavier rain and winds and provide protection from the cold.
Consider The Weight Of Your Tent
Some family tents are so large when packed up in their bags that they would not fit on roof racks. So, consider that before you commit to purchase.
Have A Price In Mind
Buying cheap will cost you more in the long run when the tent fails you. Of course, not everyone can spend a huge fortune on a tent, but sometimes the really, really cheap tents are cheap for a reason. Think to yourself before you buy: why is this tent so cheap compared to others with the same features? It might just come down to the materials and manufacturer.
How to Maintain Outdoor Tent
Never Store Your Tent Wet
Storing your tent while it’s wet or even damp can lead to the premature breakdown of its fabric and coatings. For this reason, the number one guideline for longer tent life is to make sure your tent is clean, dry and stored in a cool area out of direct sunlight. After every trip, spread your tent out until it is completely dry before packing it away again.
Treat Your Poles Well
Most pole damage occurs during setup. Try to keep the ends of the pole sections from banging together when assembling the frame as it can dent them or create cracks at the ends, which can compromise pole strength and lead to breakage. Don’t overstress the poles when setting up the tent; doing so can permanently deform the sections. Also, make sure pole segments are fully inserted into one another before bending them.
Be Kind To The Zippers
The best thing you can do to extend the life of the zipper is to go slow and use two hands when zipping your tent open or closed. Tent fabric is designed to be taut when set up, so there will always be some tension on the zipper. Assisting the zipper with a second hand, especially when going around a curve, will reduce wear on the zipper and its metal slider and help keep it running smoothly.
Keep zippers clean and free of fine grit, which can wear away at the zipper’s metal slider to the point where it no longer clinches the zipper teeth together.
